Procine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV)
PRRSV is an RNA virus belonging to the order Nidovirdae, family Arteriviridae. It is classified in two genotypes, European (EU/l) and North American (NA/II). The infection can cause respiratory infection in piglets and reproductive failure in pregnant sows. In 2006, a highly pathogenic NA PRRV (HP PRRSV) strain appeared that is characterized by producing high fever and high mortality in pigs of all ages.
