Influenza A virus
Influenzavirus A viruses belong to the family Orthomyxoviridae. They have a great genetic diversity and a wide range of virulence. They are grouped according to their pathogenicity into highly and poorly pathogenic strains. The duck is its natural reservoir of low pathogenic strains (LPAIV). Highly pathogenic strains (HPAIV) belong to the H5 or H7 subtypes and can cause avian plague in domestic poultry with great economic losses. Influenza A virus subtypes H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2 can also cause respiratory tract infections in pigs, as can subtype H3N8 in equids.
