Canine babesiosis is a tick-borne hemoparasitic protozoan disease caused by hemoprotozoan parasites of the genus Babesia. The two predominant species capable of naturally infecting dogs are Babesia gibsoni and Babesia canis. Babesia gibsoni is a small, pleomorphic organism, and Babesia canis is a large, pyriform organism that exists singly or in pairs within erythrocytes. A trinomial nomenclature system has been proposed for Babesia canis as B. canis canis, B. canis vogeli and B. canis rossi.
